Musée de la Médecine The former hospital of Hautefort projects a strong energy and glowing image within this typical village of the Pérgord noir. Founded in 1669 by the Marquis Jacques-François de Hautefort following a royal edict issued by Louis XIV in 1662 recommending that provincial centres be established to care for peasants, this type of hospital foundation nevertheless remained rare. Since 1994, the building has housed a medical museum featuring both a historical representation of life in this hospital (with the reconstruction of a sick ward, a presentation of priests’ garments and items of Catholic worship from the 19th century, accounts of the political, economic and social situation of the 17th century) and a historic medicine museum featuring permanent and temporary exhibitions. Although this remarkable building fulfilled a social role to begin with, it quickly became a place where the ill were cared for. www.musee-hautefort.fr Locate the site online with the interactive map CARPARK FREE PETS C6 Open: all year round Don’t hesitate to ask for opening hours.
