Pôle Expérimental Métiers d’Art Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie du Périgord This ‘ExperimentalArts&CraftsCentre’isdedicatedtopromotingartistic professions. All year round, it hosts themed exhibitions featuring local artists and craftsmen andwomen and other nationally recognised artists from different genres. Including crafts such as turned wood, ceramic, stained glass, smooth tapestry, mosaic andmore, these exhibitions focus on contemporary designs created with traditional expertise. The centre is open to new designs and innovations, and accommodates a designer- in-residence every two years. Located in a vast 18th-century estate, overlooking Bandiat Valley and ‘Les Jardins des Arts’ (‘Arts Gardens’), this ‘castle’ also includes an ‘Espace Lames et Métaux’ (‘Blades and Metals Space’) featuring a collection of some hundred locally produced and artistic knives, as well as the Métiers d’Arts Boutique. Activities: demonstrations and participation in arts-and-crafts workshops and initiation courses led by art professionals. You may also encounter the craftsmen in their workshops, in Nontron and the surrounding area. As the first museum founded in the Dordogne, the ‘Périgord Art and Archaeology Museum’ offers 2,000 m2 of display space, featuring an arts circuit from prehistory to the present day, as seen from various points of view: local, European and international. It is the only museum of its kind in the Dordogne. The left wing contains a prehistoric archaeological collection (the 4th greatest collection in all of France) as well as pieces fromAfrica and Oceania (7th largest collection in France). The cloister presents the vestiges of the 6th to 18th centuries including original sculptures from Roman times that were found in the Saint Front cathedral.The right wing exposes the major pieces of the fine arts collection, spanning from the 16th century to the present (the largest collection in the Dordogne). Activities: Family discovery circuit with creative workshops.
