Maison Forte de Reignac Built into the cliff side and overlooking the river, the Maison forte de Reignac is undeniably one of the most myterious and strange castles in the « Périgord ». Some say the house might even be haunted… the inside is entirely fournished and exceptionally conserved since the fourteenth century. It is considered the only troglodytic « cliff- castle » entirely intact in France. The inside of the house is a lot bigger and spacious than it may seem from the outside since the rooms are built arround numerous deep rock shelters along side the cliff : the main reception room, the armoury, the great hall, the private chapel, kitchen, bedrooms and the dungeon… So let your imagination run as this unusal and captivating monument transports you through history. Activities: The visit also includes an exhibition on “torture during the middle ages”. Open: all year round except from November to April: open exclusively by reservation and during school holidays. La Madeleine For many visitors to the Périgord noir, La Madeleine is first and foremost a prehistoric site. Eponymous with Magdalenian culture, it is one of the major sites of the Vézère Valley. From the 8th century, man would build up habitations within this same cliff overlooking the Vézère River. The troglodyte village of La Madeleine is certainly one of the most representative examples of the long human occupation of our region. This long presence fully justifies the area’s nickname, ‘the prehistoric valley’. www.la-madeleine-perigord.com www.maison-forte-reignac.com F7 F6 Troglodyte dwellings CDT Dordogne Catalogue
