It features 10 remarkable rock shelters which were occupied by Neanderthal man 85,000 years ago, than by Cro-Magnonman 35,000 years ago. This is one of the densest concentrations of archaeological deposits in Europe, reflecting an exceptional continuity of human occupation. In 2012, the site of Castel Merle came into the spotlight when American researchers announced that they had managed to precisely date an engraved block to 37,000 years ago. Castel Merle therefore houses one of the oldest forms of cave art in Europe and possibly in the world. Activities: propulsor shooting, prehistoric adornment workshop, painting, demonstration of flint knapping and fire-starting. New features / exhibitions: The first ‘Prehistory Fête’ will be held during the European championships of propulsor and bow-and-arrow shooting. A holographic film, touch pads and an immersive scenography are part of the installations you will see. You will end your visit by a walk in the woods with sound, discovering the hunting track of the Cro-Magnon Man with a superb view of the village and the Vézère Valley Beyond.
