La Roque Gageac, a former property of the bishops of Sarlat, is nestled between the cliff face and the Dordogne River. It was entirely fortified and still features both a troglodyte fort and the vestiges of a castle. The microclimate that its location lends - with full protection from the north and full exposure to the south - has enabled a luxuriant tropical garden to develop along its charming lanes.
