This village, which youmust climb to visit, is overlooked by the most emblematic feudal castle of the Périgord. You’ll have to scale the steep streets that lead to the barrys or quarters of this village, which was once fortified, to get a feel for the organisation of such a village in medieval times. The urban planning was dictated by the various professions of its inhabitants, such as wood and hemp craftemen high up in the town, cargo and fishing tradesmen along the water, and guards watching over the Dordogne Valley. Beynac castle, which has been used as a set for some dozen films (Captain Blood, D’Artagnan, La fille de d’Artagnan, Les Visiteurs, Joan of Arc and more), offers one of the most breathtaking views in the region over the magnificent Dordogne Valley, one of the rare European rivers to carry the UNESCO label ‘Man and the Bioshpere’ for its exceptional level of preservation.
