164 The Périgord is the ideal place for a hiking excursion. For nearly 400,000 years, it has seen generations of hunters, hikers and pilgrims pass... For your encounter with nature, history, culture, and rural and built heritage, the Périgord provides 1,130 kilometres of long-distance footpaths (GR) and 7,000 kilometres of short-distance footpaths (PDIPR). On the Compostella route, 200 kilometres of the GR 654, marked in white and red, cross the Dordogne from north to south, through the towns of La Coquille, Thiviers, Sorges, Périgueux, Bergerac and Monbazillac. To find your way, the Comité départemental du Tourisme de la Dordogne publishes the collection Sentiers du Pérgord, featuring 39 map-guides to reveal the Périgord as seen on foot. These pedestrian maps were designed for hikers as well as horseback riders and all-terrain bike riders. They indicate the networks for all types of circuits, from loop walks to long-distance trails. Among the itinerant walks, there are 2 adjustable that can be adapted between 3 and 5 days to follow in Harrison Barker's footsteps in the Dordogne Valley (English traveller who undertook to write books to share his experiences with the people of southern France). Plan between 5 and 7 days of hiking, to follow the itinerary "in the footsteps of the Men of Lascaux" between Terrasson Les Eyzies and Limeuil.
